Metafields are where your store keeps the data Shopify does not give you a box for: a fabric, a wattage, a shelf code, a country of origin, a delivery window. When that data lives at the variant level (per size, per color, per SKU), it becomes both the most useful and the most painful thing in your catalog to maintain.
This guide covers the real ways to bulk edit Shopify variant metafields, and how to do it without losing a clear view of what is changing or a way back.
What variant metafields are, and why bulk matters
A metafield is a custom field defined by a namespace, a key, and a type (text, number, a measurement, and so on). A variant metafield attaches that field to a single variant rather than the whole product. So a t-shirt product might have one metafield per size-and-color variant: a precise weight, a supplier code, a restock date.
The moment you have more than a few variants, editing these by hand stops scaling. A supplier sends a new code list, a season changes a measurement across a range, and suddenly you need to touch hundreds of variant metafields at once. That is a bulk job, and the admin was not built for it.
Why they are so painful to edit one by one
- They are buried. Variant metafields sit inside each variant, inside each product. Reaching one is several clicks deep, every time.
- They are invisible in lists. You cannot scan a column of values to spot the wrong one, the way you can with prices.
- There is no safety net. Once you overwrite a value, the previous one is gone. No batch undo.
So the goal is the same as with any risky bulk edit: do the work where you can see it, and keep a way back.
Method 1: the Shopify admin
If you have created a metafield definition and pinned it, you can edit a variant metafield directly on that variant. This is fine for a one-off correction. It does not scale: it is strictly one variant at a time, with no formulas and no preview across the set.
Method 2: CSV import with metafield columns
Shopify's product CSV can carry metafield columns, so you can export, fill values in a spreadsheet, and import back. This is the classic way to move a lot of metafield data at once.
Where it falls short:
- The format is exacting. The column header has to name the metafield and its type precisely, and a small mistake can write the wrong field or fail silently.
- No before-and-after preview. You import and then go hunting through variants to confirm.
- No one-click undo. Fixing a bad import means restoring from an earlier export.
Method 3: a Google Sheet with Gridwell
This approach keeps the spreadsheet comfort and adds the preview and undo the CSV path is missing. Gridwell connects a private Google Sheet to your store and lets you push variant metafields the same way you push prices.
Step 1: Create the definition, then connect your sheet
Make sure the variant metafield definition exists (namespace, key, type) so the field is real. Then connect your Google Sheet through Google's secure file picker, so Gridwell only ever sees the one sheet you choose.
Step 2: Map your identifier and the metafield column
Map the column that identifies the variant (such as SKU) and the column that holds the metafield value. You set this mapping once and reuse it for every future update.
Step 3: Preview every change
Before anything is written, Gridwell shows a before-and-after preview for each variant: the current metafield value, the new value, and which variants are affected. This is where a typo or a row that should not have changed gets caught, while it is still harmless.
Step 4: Push in bulk, undo if needed
Push the whole batch in one click. If a change is wrong, Gridwell keeps a snapshot of the metafield values it changed, so you can undo the last push and restore the previous values instantly.
What you can store in a variant metafield
Common per-variant data that merchants manage in bulk:
- Supplier and logistics data: supplier SKU, carton code, restock date, lead time.
- Specs and attributes: precise weight or dimensions, material, wattage, capacity.
- Merchandising data: badges, care instructions, country of origin, compliance notes.
Gridwell focuses on exactly the data that is most repetitive and most error-prone to maintain: variant prices and variant metafields, edited from your sheet with a preview and undo on every push.
Which method should you use?
| Shopify admin | CSV import | Gridwell (Google Sheet) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edits many variants at once | No | Yes | Yes |
| Before-and-after preview | No | No | Yes |
| One-click undo | No | No | Yes |
| Reuse the same setup | No | Manual | Saved mapping |
| Risk on a wrong change | Low but manual | Higher | Lower |
For a single correction, the admin is fine. For a one-off rebuild you are confident about, CSV works. For recurring metafield updates you need to do safely, a previewed and undoable Google Sheet workflow like Gridwell is the calmest option.

Can you bulk edit variant metafields on Shopify?
Yes. The admin edits them one variant at a time. For many at once, a CSV import with metafield columns works but has no preview or undo, while a Google Sheet app like Gridwell lets you map a column to a variant metafield, preview every change, push in bulk, and undo the batch.
How do I add metafields to variants in bulk?
Create the metafield definition first (namespace, key, type) so the field exists. Then fill the values in a spreadsheet, map your identifier and the metafield column in Gridwell, preview the before-and-after, and push them all at once.
Does Shopify's bulk editor support variant metafields?
It can show metafield columns when a definition exists, but managing variant-level metafields there is limited, with no clear preview and no one-click undo. A spreadsheet workflow fills those gaps.
Can I undo a bulk metafield change?
Not with the native admin or CSV import. Gridwell keeps a snapshot of the metafield values it changed, so you can roll the whole batch back in one click.
What metafield types can I bulk edit?
You map a spreadsheet column to a defined variant metafield and write the value in the format the definition expects, such as text, number, or a measurement. Create the definition first, then bulk-fill the values from your sheet.
